A Call to Challenge
Colleary, Shawn
Understanding Our Gifted, v16 n3 p8-11 Spr 2004
This article features the Challenge School, a magnet school in the CherryCreek School District in Colorado that focuses on academically advanced, motivated, and gifted students. The school was developed as an alternative to best meet the needs of these students. The Challenge School focuses on high student achievement and commensurate academic growth through rigorous study in humanities, mathematics, science, and foreign language along with creative integration of art, music, drama, technology, and physical education. Creating a whole-school concept specifically for academically advanced and gifted students has allowed educators to focus on instructional practices and programming that can maximize achievement. Examining current research on teaching and learning against "best practices" in gifted education led to purposely creating three major components of school: (1) structure; (2) curriculum considerations; and (3) support programs.
