This entire issue is devoted to the problem of producing enough food for the world population and of distributing it equitably. Areas covered include reports on the latest agricultural research, biological research concerned with more efficient photosynthesis, nutrition, and the world social structure, politics, and economics of food. (MA)

Sitaram, N.; Weingartner, Herbert – Science, 1978
The effects of particular drugs in human memory abilities was examined. The degree of memory enhancement produced by arecholine and choline and the impairment after scopolamaine were inversely proportional to the subject's performance in placebo; that is, "poor" performers were more vulnerable to the drugs than were "good" performers. Savage-Rumbaugh, E. Sue; And Others – Science, 1978
Through the use of learned symbols, two chimpanzees accurately specified 11 foods by name to one another when the food item's identity was known by only one and requested specific food of one another by name. Requests resulted in cooperative and reciprocal symbolically mediated food exchange. (Author/MA)

Slaughter, John B. – Science, 1981
Summarizes some recent scientific achievements in particle physics, bioinorganic chemistry, geology, and the life sciences. Discusses research as it applies to the needs of society, including areas of concern for the future. Describes the role of the National Science Foundation as supporting research and education in the sciences and engineering.…

Roberts, Leslie – Science, 1991
Described is the Rapid Assessment Program (RAP) in which a team of tropical biologists are able to get to remote, uncharted sites in the tropics and conduct surveys very quickly. The team uses satellite imagery, aerial reconnaissance, and field surveys to produce an inventory of species found in these areas. (KR)

Culliton, Barbara J. – Science, 1982
Reviews various provisions of a five-year, $23.5-million research agreement between Washington University and the Monsanto Company. The scientific focus of this venture will be on proteins and peptides which modify cellular behavior. (SK)

Gori, Gio Batta – Science, 1980
It is suggested that a system of relative standards be formulated which would compare utility of substances to their relative risk as carcinogens. This would define a range of use restrictions. Substances intended for specific uses would then be regulated according to these standards. (Author/RE)

Barnes, Deborah M. – Science, 1988
Describes advances made in the understanding of how sex hormones may modify various cognitive skills, how normal brain signaling mechanisms may cause nerve cell death, and how many cells appear to hold genetic agents which determine their own destruction. (RT)

Bambach, Richard K. – Science, 1983
Six books written in response to creationist arguments are reviewed. Indicates that the books should be of great utility in educating students in the sciences and in presenting the case for science, as separate from religion, to the uncommitted public. (JN)

Kenyon, Cynthia – Science, 1988
Discusses advantages of nematode use for studying patterns of cell division, differentiation, and morphogenesis. Describes nematode development. Cites experimental approaches available for genetic studies. Reviews the topics of control of cell division and differentiation, the nervous system, and muscle assembly and function of the organism. (RT)

Numbers, Ronald L. – Science, 1982
As the crusade to outlaw the teaching of evolution changed to a battle for equal time for creationism, the ideological defenses of that doctrine also shifted, from biblical to scientific grounds. The development of "scientific creationism" is described, focusing on the intellectual leaders of creationism, particularly those claiming scientific…
