Case Study: Guidelines for Producing Videos to Accompany Flipped Cases
Prud'homme-Généreux, Annie; Schiller, Nancy A.; Wild, John H.; Herreid, Clyde Freeman
Journal of College Science Teaching, v46 n5 p40-48 May 2017
Three years ago, the "National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science" (NCCSTS) was inspired to merge the case study and flipped classroom approaches. The resulting project aimed to create the materials required to teach a flipped course in introductory biology by assigning videos as homework and case studies in the classroom. Three cohorts of instructors were trained to produce flipped cases and their supporting videos. As this project nears its completion, this article describes some of the information provided to instructors in the 3-day video production workshop so that instructors motivated to create their own flipped videos have access to this information. Case studies and videos both use a narrative approach to learning and naturally fit together in the flipped case study classroom. The article also provides resource locations for the case collection.
