This guide reviews resources used to develop the analysis of world hunger in "Food First: Beyond the Myth of Scarcity," Houghton Mifflin, 1977. The objectives are to help people understand the economic and political factors that contribute to food deprivation, document this analysis with credible sources, and inform high school, college, and community study teachers about the existence and availability of various resources on global hunger. The developers believe that the guide might also aid teachers as they develop curriculum on world poverty. The guide is presented in four sections. Sections I and II focus on the causes of hunger. Topics discussed include population, scarcity, production, colonialism, inequality among and within nations, sexism, racism, and inefficiency. Sections III and IV discuss proposed solutions including agribusiness, economic and military intervention, international aid, socialist reforms, and the responsibility of Americans in ending world hunger. Citations of books, articles, studies, and reports are listed immediately under the topic to which they refer within each section. For each entry, information is given on title, author, publisher, date of publication, code designating the type of data to be found in the cited material, and (where appropriate) chapter and/or page.
