Recreating America's Community Colleges: Critical Policy Issues Facing America's Community Colleges
Honeyman, David S.; Sullivan, Michael D.
Community College Journal of Research & Practice, v30 n2 p177-182 Feb 2006
During the conduct of the 2004 Community Colleges Futures Assembly, sponsored by the University of Florida, delegates to the meeting identified three critical policy issues facing America's community colleges and challenged the delegates attending the 2005 Assembly to debate these issues and make recommendations. A total of 252 higher-education professionals from 29 states gathered at the 2005 Community College Futures Conference in Orlando, Florida to debate the identified critical policy issues: (1) Should public community colleges redefine their historic commitment to open access? (2) Should public community colleges form strategic alliances/partnerships with for-profit career colleges? and (3) Should public community colleges establish a separate national accrediting body? This article summarizes the 2005 Futures Assembly critical policy activities and discusses relevance, resolutions, and research topics for future consideration.
