Innovative Educational Activities for Disabled and Gifted Students. Selected Projects from the Minigrant Program.

Described is a selection of the 1981-1985 awards given by the Foundation for Exceptional Children's Bill Geer Minigrant Award Program, which supports the creation of innovative educational activities to benefit handicapped or gifted students from preschool through secondary levels. For each grant, information provided includes: project director, location, duration, population, problem, project, outcome, and product, if appropriate. In the category of education of handicapped children and youth, 12 grants are described, including a preschool enrichment program, day camp for learning-disabled students, summer speech/language program for rural children, art program, and program to develop agri-horticulture skills. Nine awards are included in gifted education, for a math fair, a study of William Shakespeare, holography, original research skills, Saturday seminars, genealogical research, etc. A job training project and social skills development project received funding in the category of careers and independent living skills. Parents were the target group of several projects dealing with parent-child relationships, improving oral communication, speech therapy, and behavior management. Parent workshop projects focused on parent-child communications, total communication, decreasing the isolation of rural parents, utilizing available resources, etc. In the category of educational technology, an active stimulation program and a project to adapt reconstructive equipment are described.
