Religion in School, Interreligious Relations and Citizenship: The Case of Pakistan
Leirvik, Oddbjorn
British Journal of Religious Education, v30 n2 p143-154 Mar 2008
The article analyses the relation between religion, education and citizenship as reflected in recent research and current debates regarding religion in Pakistani schools. Following a description of the political context, two different views (one Christian, one Muslim) on the current state of affairs are presented. After a consideration of the madrasa system and its alleged role in fostering intolerance, the article focuses mainly on the role of religion in the curricula of government-run schools. The article ends by considering prospects for reform. (Contains 2 notes.)
