Reimagining Maths Learning -- Insights from a Conceptual PlayWorld Project
Simmons, Kelli; Fleer, Marilyn
Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, v28 n1 p24-30 2023
At the commencement of 2022 there was an opportunity to be engaged in a curriculum development project focused on reimagining mathematics learning in primary schools. Schools were seeking new experiences to support engaging students and teachers in mathematics learning. Laburnum Primary School participated in the project with Monash University, led by Marilyn Fleer, beginning a whole-of-school 2022 professional learning inquiry. The school was inspired by the evidence-informed teaching model called Conceptual Play World (CPW). The model's five planning characteristics offered a new way of teaching linked to children's literature that was: relevant, meaningful, framed through investigations, creative, and importantly, collaborative. This article presents examples of how CPW was orchestrated across Foundation to Year 6 at Laburnum Primary School, in order to illustrate the five CPW characteristics.
