Energy Technology Training Conference Proceedings (Atlanta, Georgia, October 27-29, 1976).
Oak Ridge Associated Universities, TN.
Conference goals included identifying projected technical manpower needs and skill mix requirements, potential obstacles to developing an adequate technical education base, and stimulating education, industry, and labor cooperation in technical program development and federal interagency coordination and cooperation. Findings of the conference indicated: national data rarely reflected local employment demands; proprietary concerns of employers restricted access to employment trend data; limited exchange of energy-related skill supply data was evident between colleges; college intake and placement policies restricted opportunities to meet regional and national needs; uniform energy occupational categories were lacking; high technology programs required equipment and facilities that were too costly for most colleges; federal funds tended to favor start-up support rather than to strengthen existing programs; and industrial employers did not universally accept that colleges produce quality employees. Recommendations for ameliorating these problems are made. Reports on technology workshops in the coal, nuclear, petroleum, and solar energy fields include a summary of technician needs, skill requirements, industry assessment of community college programs, cooperative training programs, existing programs and curricula, instructor qualifications, and economy of scale in each field.
