Exploring the Health Education Needs of Young People.
Devine, Marion; Mapp, Jacqueline
This document reports on a 2-year study to determine the health education needs of young people in Scotland and to collaborate with teachers to improve the delivery of health education in relation to specific issues. The study was in two phases. Phase 1 assessed the needs of pupils according to the views of the pupils and adults, their needs based on local problems and the differences between urban and rural schools; communication between school and home regarding students' health, opportunities for involving parents in student affairs, parental satisfaction with their involvement, and the schools' perspective regarding parental involvement; joint responsibility for health education, including the most appropriate place for discussion of related subjects and where pupils can go for information; parents' and pupils' perceptions about discussions of health matters at home; the school's contribution to health education from the perspective of parents and students; and the views of students, teachers, and parents on the schools' commitment to the promotion of good health. Phase 2, which concerned two pairs of associated schools, covered staff workshops on health education; reactions to the findings of Phase 1 on the different perspectives regarding health education; issues for discussion; and implications and recommendations. Three appendices provide the questionnaires and tables of health promoting activities (both primary and secondary), and social education syllabus (secondary). (Contains 11 references.) (CK)
