This guide to resources on India is designed to help teachers, students, librarians, and general adult readers locate materials that will help them understand Indian civilization. It is presented in five chapters. Chapter I offers three essays--"Learning About India: An Overview on Understanding India," by P. Lal; "On Teaching India," by Donald Johnson, and "Textbook Images of India," by Bonnie R. Crown. Chapter II presents an annotated bibliography of over 300 books on India in five major categories: basic books, the arts, personal accounts, pleasure, and children's literature. For each entry, information is presented on the title, author, number of pages, publisher, publication date, cost, and an annotation. Chapter III suggests audiovisual materials in nine categories--films, film cartridges, filmstrips, audio tapes and records, video tapes and cassettes, multimedia kits, slides, charts, and photographs, Topics include geography and history, economic and social development, cities and villages, families and individuals, religion, biography, and the arts. For each entry, information is presented on type of material, time required, appropriate age level, description, producer, and ordering and rental information. Chapter IV suggests source materials, including reference bibliographies, newspapers, journals, maps, and resource centers. The final chapter introduces Indian and South Asian collections in museums in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Concluding the document is an appendix containing information on ordering, pronouncing Indian words, publishers and distributors, and an author/title index. (DB)
