Various approaches to introductory courses in social work research in Canada are described. Objectives of the report are to promote informational exchange among instructors in schools of social work, to provide data on common practices employed in the instruction of introductory research, to encourage innovation and experimentation, and to aid in policy recommendations for minimum standards for introductory research courses. Major sections present course outlines, assignments, and examinations. Four approaches serve as categories for course outlines--the logic of inquiry applied to social work problems, methodology and statistics, understanding and utilization of research, and a combined approach. Assignments fall into the category of non-statistical or statistical. Non-statistical assignments focus on research design and analysis and research concepts while statistical examples focus on computer and non-computer methods. Examples of examinations are categorized according to emphasis on conceptual thinking, research design, or statistics (theory and computational). Examples are drawn from the University of Calgary, Dalhousie University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, McGill University, the University of British Columbia, the University of Regina, and the University of Toronto.
