Innovative Approaches to Literacy Education: Using the Internet to Support New Literacies

Teachers will discover new instructional ideas and resources for the classroom, new visions for the school and district, and new ways to view their work. This volume combines two powerful perspectives that will help use the Internet to support literacy learning: (1) The stories of exemplary teachers who successfully use the Web in their classrooms, and (2) Findings of scholars who study literacy and technology. Teachers will make important connections among theory, research, and practice, and prepare themselves for the challenges that come with learning, teaching, and using new literacies. The book begins with a a Preface (Rachel A. Karchmer, Marla H. Mallette, Julia Kara-Soteriou and Donald J. Leu, Jr.). Following a section on Contributors, the following chapters are included: (1) Contextualizing the New Literacies of Information and Communication Technologies in Theory, Research, and Practice (Donald J. Leu, Jr., Marla H. Mallette, Rachel A. Karchmer and Julia Kara-Soteriou) and is then divided into three sections. Section I, A Commitment to Social Change and Community Service contains the following chapters: (2) Books on Tape for Kids: A Language Arts?Based Service-Learning Project (Gino Sangiuliano); (3) Giving It Away: The Earth Day Groceries Project (Mark Ahlness); (4) Literacy and Technology: A World of Ideas (Cathleen J. Chamberlain) and (5) The Intersection of Schools, Communities, and Technology: Recognizing Children's Use of New Literacies (Charles K. Kinzer). Section II, A Commitment to Collaboration contains the chapters: (6) My Internet Projects and Other Online Resources for the Literacy Classroom (Marci McGowan); (7) Getting Connected: My Experience as a Collaborative Internet Project Coordinator (Susan Silverman); (8) The Flat Stanley Project and Other Authentic Applications of Technology in the Classroom (Dale Hubert); (9) Connecting Technology and Literacy: A Journey From "How Do I Turn on This Computer?" to "My Class Is Blogging Their Book Revles." (Mary Kreul), (10) Bee Stings, Wooden Blocks, and Web Browsers (Tim C. Lauer); and (11) Fundamental Qualities of Effective Internet Literacy Instruction: An Exploration of Worthwhile Classroom Practices (Linda D. Labbo). Section III, A Commitment to Teacher Education and Professional Development contains: (12) Miss Rumphius as a Role Model for Preservice Teachers (Denise Johnson) and (13) Every Teacher a Miss Rumphius: Empowering Teachers With Effective Professional Development (Julie Coiro). The book concludes with the Appendix, Author Index and Subject Index.
