A Typology of Instructors in Higher Education
Nazarova, Inna Borisovna
Russian Education and Society, v50 n7 p7-16 Jul 2008
In the present article, the relevant and little-studied issue of the typology of instructors in institutions of higher learning is examined using the example of educators conducting the cycle of economic disciplines. In 2003 and 2004 a survey was conducted of the corps of instructors in fourteen higher educational institutions of four cities (three in Moscow, four in St. Petersburg, three in Ekaterinburg, and four in Nizhnii Novgorod). A formalized questionnaire was used to interview 359 instructors of economic specialties (35 percent men and 65 percent women between the ages of twenty-one and seventy-eight); in addition, expert and in-depth interviews were conducted with instructors. The survey materials reveal a profile of the average instructor--a woman of forty-four with two children. She teaches more than three courses and is working simultaneously in two institutions of higher learning; she is engaged in about four kinds of work that produce an income. Of course it is not "average" instructors who are working in institutions of higher learning, but specific instructors of definite "types", some of which can be represented on the basis of the data of semiformalized, formalized, and expert interviews and focus groups. A classification of these groups is being compiled. (Contains 2 notes.)
