Instructional Computing in the Community Colleges of Washington State.
Howard, Alan; And Others
A description of current activities in instructional computing in Washington State community colleges is presented, along with curriculum content guidelines and planning procedures to assist colleges which plan to initiate or upgrade their activities in instructional computing. The document provides an overview of computing activities in the entire system and profiles 28 individual colleges, describing courses that are directly related to computing, such as data processing and computer science, and courses that use computing in an ancillary fashion, such as those that use computer-based instruction, computer-managed instruction, and computer-assisted instruction. A description of resources and equipment maintained by each college is provided. A section on planning procedures outlines curriculum objectives and typical content for instructional courses which require access to computing facilities; and describes software, hardware, personnel, and other requirements necessary to meet stated course objectives. The final section presents resource specifications and acquisition procedures, including examples of cost analyses and cost summaries, which will permit the colleges to move from their present level of instructional computing to a more advanced level in a phased growth manner. A glossary of terms and a bibliography conclude the document. (DR)
