Language Arts Handbook for Primary Teachers in Multi-Graded Classrooms. South-Central Region.

This handbook presents materials designed to assist teachers in meeting the needs of primary school children in multi-graded classrooms. The handbook is divided into two parts. The first part consists of the following sections: (1) the multi-graded school; (2) strategies for multi-graded classrooms; (3) oracy--listening and speaking; (4) language development for the English as a second language (ESL) child; (5) reading; (6) writing; (7) spelling; and (8) learning centers. The second part--themes and extra ideas--contains an outline on how to plan a theme, and samples of three themes (toys, Noah's ark, and families of long ago). Appendixes include 12 research findings about learning, an analysis of N.W. Sundbye's 25 elements, footnotes, and an 11-item bibliography. (MM)
