A Case Study of Education Support and Services for Foster Children
Chambers-Nash, Carmen Jeneice
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
The research problem was a case study to understand the problem of a significant number of high school graduates leaving foster care without receiving the services necessary to survive as adults. The purpose of the study was to explore services and supports for youths that are necessary for post-graduation success. The research questions in this study involved understanding of how African American Foster Care adolescents perceive available services and supports while transitioning to adult independence. The research approach was a qualitative case study to explore the views and life transitions of African Americans who have aged out of the foster care system. The theoretical framework was based on the principles of child and adolescent development. Contemporary development and resilience theories guided this study. Data was collected from a semistructed questionnaire derived from the research question. A pilot study was used to support the credibility of the qualitative instrument. Data was coded and analyzed for themes from participants' responses. The findings of the study suggested that services are available to adolescents transitioning from foster care, but an increased awareness of the variety of services is needed. Implications for positive social change for educators and students include continue support and expansion of resources for children who have aged out of foster care and their transition process.
