This paper is based on three beliefs. First, technology can engage and challenge students' thinking. Second, technology can assist students in creating quality work. Finally, computer-generated student-work can be used as educational tools in productive ways that other student-work cannot. This article suggests new ways to use old technologies to fulfill all three premises. More specifically, the author proposes inventive uses for Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Paint, and Internet imagery in ways teachers will deem effective and students will find accessible and engaging. The author applies these techniques to one portion of the social studies that has stagnated in finding ways to creatively engage students: current events. (Contains 4 figures and 33 notes.)
