A STEM-Based, High School Aviation Course
Surra, Alex; Litowitz, Len S.
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v74 n4 p28-30 Dec 2014-Jan 2015
The authors describe a vocational training course that was developed to give more than just an overview of how aircraft work, or a course on how to fly. This training course was a half-year course in aviation technology. Powered flight is an area of interest for many students, and the intent of creating a curriculum rich with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics had multiple positive attributes. A curriculum outline was created based upon goals established and ultimately implemented. Major units of study were assessed with a written test and, in the case of manipulative skills, a manipulative competency test was also administered. The information gained from a flight-training course was supplemented with additional information about the rich history of aviation, along with the broad array of careers associated with aviation, such as air traffic control, aircraft maintenance, and airport administration, in addition to the various aspects of piloting. The authors state that the research, creation, and implementation of this course was considered a success. The majority of enrolled students went from knowing very little about aviation to understanding the history, career opportunities, aircraft systems, instrumentation, basic aircraft control, weather, and flight planning associated with piloting and actual flight.
