Media Ratings for Violence and Sex: Implications for Policymakers and Parents.
Bushman, Brad J.; Cantor, Joanne
American Psychologist, v58 n2 p130-41 Feb 2003
Reviewed research on the implementation of media rating systems, parents' use and evaluation of them, and the impact of ratings on children. Restricted media ratings made programs more attractive to children over age 8 years and to adolescents. Parents preferred that ratings specify content rather than age recommendations. Despite a complex array of rating systems for television, movies, games, and Internet sites, 50-80 percent of parents relied on them. (SM)
