Parents and Schools: A Shared Responsibility.
Los Angeles Unified School District, CA. Office of Instruction.
This document presents guidelines developed by the Los Angeles Unified School District to help strengthen support from parents, the community, and community leaders for the school district's programs. It provides a statement regarding school and parent responsibilities and suggestions for how the school staff and parents, working together, may contribute to the improvement of the instructional program. Suggestions outlined in the paper are to serve as a reference for schools. Twelve major areas of consideration regarding the responsibilities of parents and schools in improving the district's instructional programs are identified: (1) curriculum and instructional materials; (2) testing programs; (3) enrichment, remediation, and special programs; (4) learning styles and teaching strategies; (5) learning environment; (6) high expectations; (7) marking practices; (8) attendance policies; (9) promotional requirements; (10) homework; (11) graduation requirements; and (12) discipline. For each of these areas, a brief description of the goal is given and separate sets of responsibilities are listed under the headings of School Responsibilities and Parent Responsibilities. A list of resource materials is included. (NB)
