Partnering with Families. Focal Point: A National Bulletin on Family Support and Children's Mental Health. Volume 18, Number 1, Summer 2004
Walker, Janet S., Ed.
Research and Training Center on Family Support and Children's Mental Health
The articles in this issue of "Focal Point" focus on the Research and Training Center's current work, which reflects the evolution of expectations for partnering with youth and families. Partnering successfully requires not only a philosophical commitment to the value, but also intentional, specific steps to redesign services and reallocate resources so as to remove logistical and interpersonal barriers that impede family and youth participation. The articles also highlight new thinking about responses to the complex needs of children and families. In particular, findings help to move the idea of partnerships beyond the formal service sector into other arenas of community participation, such as education and the work life of family caregivers. The articles in this issue are: (1) Partnering with Families (Janet S. Walker and Barbara Friesen); (2) Disclosure and Reciprocity: On the Job Strategies for Taking Care of Business and Family (Julie M. Rosenzweig and Kitty Huffstutter); (3) Getting Your Money's Worth: What Early Childhood Program Directors Should Know about Working with Mental Health Professionals (Beth L. Green, Maria C. Everhart, and Lynwood J. Gordon); (4) Promoting Inclusion in Child Care Centers: Learning from Success (Jennifer Bradley, Shane Ama, Maria L. Garcia Gettman, Eileen Brennan, and Peris Kibera); (5) Underrepresented Researchers Mentoring Program: One Mentee's Story (Maria L. Garcia Gettman); (6) Team Practices to Increase Individualization in Wraparound (Janet S. Walker); (7) Wraparound and Juvenile Justice: Making a Connection that Works (Jodi Kerbs, Rita Gaylor, Michael Pullmann, and Patricia Roe); (8) Partnership in Evaluation: Training Implications (Pauline Jivanjee, Kathryn Schutte, and Adjoa Robinson); (9) Family Participation in Out-of-Home Treatment Settings: Challenges and Opportunities (Barbara Friesen); and (10) Building on Family Strengths Conference (Lynwood J. Gordon).
