In response to a request from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Region V of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsored a workshop on waste management in universities and colleges. It consisted of four sessions: (1) managing general university waste and regulatory concerns; (2) chemical waste management; (3) low-level radioactive waste; and (4) research- and hospital-generated waste. This report contains all workshop papers that EPA received for publication. Selected topics discussed in these papers include: methods of handling nonhazardous wastes at colleges/universities; legal issues in hazardous waste management affecting colleges/universities; federal hazardous waste regulation applicable to colleges/universities; initiation, development, and operation of a hazardous waste program at the University of Illinois at Carbondale; packaging, transportation, and disposal of wastes off campus; application of Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations to university waste disposal practices; safety considerations in disposal of low-level radioactive waste; experiences with incineration of low-level radioactive waste at the University of Illinois; waste disposal at the medical center of the University of Illinois; and hospital waste management programs at the health science/hospital complex at the University of Minnesota.
