Working with Young Adults. NIACE Lifelines in Adult Learning.
Jackson, Carol
This document explains how adult educators and others in the United Kingdom can increase levels of participation and achievement in learning for young adults by providing informal learning opportunities for those young people who are least inclined to participate in formal education and training programs. The guide outlines a step-by-step approach to establishing and managing projects and includes inspirations to illustrate models of effective and innovative practice. Sections 1 through 10 discuss the following topics: the policy context and challenges of engaging young adults in learning; the rationale for providing learning opportunities; reasons the youth approach works; providing effective programs; exploring 21st century skills; delivering in practice; reasons learning is important in supporting young adults; monitoring, reviewing, evaluating, and disseminating; celebrating; and letting go and moving on. The following are among the 17 good practices, 7 challenges, and 9 troubleshooting strategies that are listed in Section 11: (1) start by identifying gaps in provision for young learners; (2) relate to the wider social, cultural, and economic context; (3) dedicate time to attending to individual learners' progress and achievement; (4) use community-based accessible venues where young people feel comfortable; and (5) provide the option of accreditation for learners. A glossary and lists of 7 suggestions for further reading and 10 contacts and networks are included. (MN)
