Vocabulary Development in Technology and Engineering Education

Some students have trouble performing well on summative tests in technology and engineering education. This is largely due to the students' inability to apply the terms to real-world scenarios (Baker, Simmons, & Kameenui, 1995). Exams often provide situational questions and, with these, critical-thinking skills are required. Students may lack this deep level of understanding. Some students have an aversion to learning vocabulary or struggle with how to study it. Understanding vocabulary terms associated with technical content is required at a rigorous level in engineering and technology education programs. Instructional units may have an overwhelming amount of language central to genuinely understanding the theoretical portion of engineering and technology. There are strategies for vocabulary development that may be utilized in technology and engineering classrooms. These include formative assessments such as vocabulary practice sheets that require deep reflection and conversations with students in the lab using technical terms. This article will review effective strategies for teaching vocabulary in engineering and technology classrooms.
