The National Energy Center at Bismarck State College
Thigpen, Donna S.
Community College Journal of Research & Practice, v30 n2 p161-162 Feb 2006
Energy production is an essential part of American society and the economy. In the best tradition of community colleges, Bismarck State College (BSC) in North Dakota has responded to the specialized training needs of industry for over 25 years by forming various collaborative efforts with the energy industry. This article presents an example of how one such collaboration resulted in an online Electric Power Technology program, which prepares students for positions in the transmission and distribution sectors of the electrical industry. This is a national program that has curriculum input and support from the Energy Providers Coalition for Education, which consists of over 20 of the largest electrical energy companies in the nation. BSC was also able to secure funding for an Electrical Transmissions System Technology (ETST) program through a National Science Foundation grant. The program is to develop state of the art online courses that use interactive learning tools and simulations to help prepare students for real life situations.
