A Consolidation of ACE Research, 1990-2000. Review of Research.
Golding, Barry; Davies, Merryn; Volkoff, Veronica
The volume and scope of research into adult and community education (ACE) in Australia have increased significantly over the past decade. Studies designed to map, reevaluate, showcase, and promote ACE have been funded by Australia's federal and state governments and by bodies such as Adult Learning Australia. Practitioner-generated research has also proved significant. Key approaches to ACE research over the decade have ranged from broad-brush quantitative and mapping exercises and studies aiming at clarifying the extent and nature of participation and provision to projects exploring issues of practice, pedagogy, the targeting of particular client populations, and the multidimensionality of outcomes. Since the middle of the decade, ACE research has focused particularly on the underrepresentation in ACE of groups such as women, people whose native language is other than English, rural and remote populations, people with disabilities, older learners, indigenous people/communities, unemployed people, early school leavers, and small business proprietors and employees. Nonparticipation, ACE outcomes and contributions, and opportunities and challenges in ACE have been objects of research. The following areas are among those identified as meriting further research: marketing and promotion; interface with other sectors; new conceptions of adult learning; learning communities; lifelong learning; and impacts of social change on ACE.
