The Trajectory of Techniques: Lessons from the Past.
Crease, Robert P.
Science, v257 n5068 p350-53 Jun 1992
Discusses role of laboratory techniques in scientific investigations. Describes Rutherford's development of scattering techniques and von Wassermann's development of test for syphilis. States that discovering an effect requires a brilliant scientist, however, making it a technique requires that it be made usable by ordinary people. Uses Moseley's work in Rutherford's lab to show how some techniques absorb other techniques. (PR)
