The initiative to revise Texas Christian University's (TCU) general education curriculum was one of the outcomes of an institutional strategic planning process in 2000, the Commission on the Future of TCU. Coincident with this planning process, TCU developed a new institutional mission statement that focused on preparing students for becoming responsible citizens and ethical leaders in the global community. The institution was then faced with the problem of designing a curriculum that would be consistent with the new mission statement and would facilitate assessment within the framework of the already existing academic structure of the university. To design such a curriculum would entail addressing the issues of how to match the goals of general education with the institution's mission and values, and how to meld general education with the students' major fields of study. In this article, the authors describe how faculty at TCU revised the institution's general education curriculum, discuss the design of the revised curriculum, explain the importance of the course vetting process to success of the implementation process, and discuss the assessment process.
