Mental Health Stigma: A Critical Analysis of Literature on Peer Support and Help-Seeking Behaviors among College Students
Ray Trac
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Regent University
The present study critically analyzes relevant literature on peer support and help-seeking behaviors among college students as it relates to mental health stigma. The purpose of this study emphasizes the growing concern of mental health in higher education as colleges continue to navigate the challenges to support students experiencing levels of psychological distress. Furthermore, it acknowledges that such concern deserves national attention as mental health among college students is associated with declining rates in retention and graduation and increasing rates in suicidality. The present study explores three central themes as a result of the critical analysis of literature--disclosure, motivation, and intervention. Each are imperative in the discussion of peer support and help-seeking behaviors among college students as it relates to addressing mental health stigma. Additionally, the three themes of disclosure, motivation, and intervention contribute to the growing body of research on mental health stigma in higher education and provide opportunities for future research to explore the key benefits of peer support and help-seeking behaviors among college students, as well as some limitations to consider.
