Understanding the Impact of Refugee Resettlement in the United States: Data Analysis, Stories, and Resources for Lesson Planning
Social Education, v83 n6 p330-335 Nov-Dec 2019
Discussions about immigration and refugee resettlement can be challenging to navigate. America's immigration system is highly complex, and confusion about who is allowed to enter the United States, and how, can lead to the spread of misinformation. It is also a highly salient topic that students are likely to encounter frequently in their daily lives--on the news or through their lived experiences. A variety of research tools, reports, and multimedia, are available to help educators approach this issue with nuance, bringing data to life with colorful visualizations and compelling stories. This article presents data that enables teachers and their students to examine the issues of the impact of refugees on American communities, to identify common misperceptions about refugees, to obtain interactive tools for understanding immigration and refugee resettlement, and to access the personal stories of refugees in U.S. communities. [This article was written by New American Economy, a bipartisan research and advocacy organization that focuses on immigration issues. Dan Wallace provided the information included in this article.]
