Socialism in the United States: Hidden in Plain Sight
Shaffer, Robert
Social Education, v80 n1 p31-35 Jan-Feb 2016
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, a democratic socialist who for three decades has won office as an Independent, has put "socialism" back in American political discourse. Sanders's campaign in the 2016 Democratic Party primaries reminds educators that there is a socialist tradition in American politics and society. This article discusses the invisibility of socialism in U.S. textbooks and U.S. socialism in a historical perspective.
