The Worms Are Dancing!
Lange, Alissa; Lodien, Lynn; Lowe, Anna
Science and Children, v56 n8 p40-45 Apr 2019
In this article, a class of preschool children completed a week of lessons on worms in preparation for a visit by real worms. Prior to the real worm visit, the students learned about the bodies of worms. They also learned vocabulary words such as "segments." They documented thoughts and predictions about worms using drawings. Preparing for this worm experience, the children thought about, talked about, and did hands-on activities "across the curriculum" about worms. The real worm experience arose from a collaboration among an early childhood professor, a preschool teacher, and undergraduate students. The experience was part of a larger project to create an integrated unit of study that covered science, math, literacy, and other domains that used the 5Es (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) framework. During the real worm visit, children explored new wiggly friends, asked questions reflecting their wonderings, and documented observations.
