Engineering Encounters: No, David! but Yes, Design! Kindergarten Students Are Introduced to a Design Way of Thinking

This column presents ideas and techniques to enhance science teaching. In today's classrooms, teachers face numerous challenges. They are preparing students for jobs and careers that are not even conceived of yet. Assessments are being used to address students' college and career readiness and to promote critical thinking and problem solving. Increasing rigor and engagement are also being called for in today's educational arena. Using a design process can be part of meeting these challenges in the classroom. This article describes how kindergarten students are introduced to a design way of thinking. The four lessons presented include all aspects of the design process, which sets the foundation for further lessons integrating science and engineering. They also serve as a formative assessment opportunity on teaching collaboration. This is an introduction to design thinking.
