The Synergy between Integrated STEM Lessons and Culturally Responsive Teaching in Elementary Classrooms
van Ingen, Sarah; Davis, Jeni; Arndt, Katie
Research in the Schools, v25 n1 p1-19 Spr 2018
In the context of elementary education that, we argue that the use of integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) lessons is synergistic with engagement in culturally responsive teaching (CRT). Instead of conceptualizing STEM and CRT as distinct approaches to teaching, we argue that they can be understood as intertwined and mutually beneficial. First, we define the concepts of integrated STEM lessons and CRT in the elementary school classroom. Then, we explain how engagement in CRT improves integrated STEM lessons and how use of integrated STEM lessons enhances cultural responsiveness. We conclude the article by addressing implications for teacher education, and we provide a lesson planning tool that supports the development of lessons that leverage the synergy of integrated STEM and CRT.
