Long before the author answered the call to become a rabbi, he brought his passion to teach to the waterfront--that special place where the waters of a river or lake meet the dry land. Today, the author still imagines himself learning and teaching others how to swim, not in the water, but in the flows of global culture, to use the language of this forum. The flows of global culture are the primary context in which the religious educators do their work. From the perspective of a multifaith educator and Jewish edu-preneur, the author has come to see that in order to form a resilient religious identity in the face of global cultural flows, adherents--the people religious educators try to reach through their religious education--must ably answer three questions: (1) How does one understand himself/herself in the presence of the religious other?; (2) How does one relate to members of his/her own faith tradition who believe differently or practice differently than he/she does?; and (3) What is one's role as a person of faith in the public square? In this article, the author explains why he thinks that religious educators must guide their adherents as they explore these three questions.
