What Teacher Preparation Programs Teach about K-12 Assessment: A Review

This report provides information on the preparation provided to teacher candidates from teacher training programs so that they can fully use assessment data to improve classroom instruction. It follows a similar shorter report the authors released in March 2012. In this newest report, the authors have significantly expanded their initial sampling to encompass 180 undergraduate and graduate programs housed in 98 institutions in 30 states. In early 2013, with U.S. News & World Report as the publisher, they will release a comprehensive review of all teacher preparation programs in the United States. That review will also include further analysis of teachers' preparation in use of assessment for instructional improvement. The authors' purpose with both preliminary reports is to encourage teacher preparation programs, along with the federal and state agencies supporting and overseeing these programs, to focus more on the importance of future teachers' knowledge and skills in the increasingly critical area of assessment. Appended are: (1) Institutions included in the sample; (2) Evaluating for the three assessment domains; (3) Research looking at how assessment is taught in teacher preparation programs and the impact on teachers; (4) State regulations, accreditation standards, professional standards; and (5) A short tutorial on the taxonomy of assessment.
