Equity in Music Education. The Journey: A Process for Creating A Socially Just Music Classroom
Soto, Amanda Christina
Music Educators Journal, v104 n4 p54-57 Jun 2018
Music educators share the responsibility of preparing students to become global citizens by providing equal and fair access to a music education through a socially just music classroom. Music education scholars advocate that instead of trying to define social justice or trying to achieve it in the classroom, educators should ask themselves how they can be "socially just agents" through reciprocity and by seeking to understand others through meaningful conversation and interactions. This article presents ideas and a framework that can provide a starting place from which to create a more socially just music classroom. Teachers should remember that there is no end goal or finish line. Changes in educators' thought processes and teaching practices may evolve over time as they apply the principles described in this article.
