Anchors for Resilience: Strategies and Routines Resilient Leaders Use to Balance Competing Priorities
Kim, Anthony; Hanna, Tomás; Dotres, José
Learning Professional, v40 n5 p18-19, 21, 23 Oct 2019
Demands on education leaders are changing rapidly, and being a leader isn't getting any easier. Principals, superintendents, and others are pulled and stretched in many directions by staff, parents, community members, and school boards, as well as their own families. Leaders' roles require them to have an attention to detail, an ability to be strategic and disciplined, and the skills to connect emotionally with others -- and to do so all at the same time, and even in trying times. In this context, resilience is a crucial component of effective leadership. Based on the authors' review, resilient leadership has three anchors: (1) Building psychological safety; (2) Maintaining a learning organization; and (3) Applying individual discipline. In this article, they describe why each is important and how each can be cultivated by education leaders for the benefit of their teams. They draw on both their experience and examples as well as those from other highly effective organizations.
