Vocational FCS Programs Attract Students Outside U.S.
Lewis, Ruth D.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v96 n3 p68-69 2004
Florida International University (FIU) strives to meet the ever-changing needs of individuals in America as well as in other countries through education. Uniting the Family and Consumers Sciences (FCS) Program with the Higher Education Program in the College of Education became a way to fulfill the needs of international students and reach out to other countries. This program offers a Masters in Higher Education Community College Leadership, with an 18-hour FCS Certificate, which will provide the knowledge and skills needed to enhance high-school programs, and provide a pathway for educators to teach in community colleges. This collaboration has gained popularity in The Bahamas as well as The United Arab Emirates countries. A high percentage of the teachers in the Bahamian public schools have a bachelors' degree. The need for vocational programs to teach high-school students employment skills is of great value to the Island people. Both partners agree that accomplishing this goal will raise the level of education across the Islands and provide better teachers.
