Smart Bodies: Louisiana Responds to Youth Overweight
Murphy, Ellen P.; Holston, Denise; Tuuri, Georgianna
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v97 n2 p61-63 Apr 2005
In Louisiana, it is estimated that almost 33% of school-age children are at risk for becoming overweight or are already overweight (Louisiana Office of Public Health, 2004). Studies have shown that poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and weight problems often associated with being overweight adversely affect academic performance in school children (American Academy of Family Physicians, 2004; CDC, 2004b). As a result of these findings, recommendations have been made for schools to implement "best practices" for nutrition and physical activity. In response, a partnership was formed between the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Child Caring Foundation, Inc. to raise awareness of and prevent childhood obesity. This article profiles the "Smart Bodies" program that resulted from this partnership. The program is a three-part project designed to increase awareness of healthy weight among children, promote better eating practies, and encourage a physically active lifestyle for Louisiana's elementary school children and their families.
