"I've Known Rivers": A Reflection on the Synergy of Multigenre, Multimodal Texts
Richter, Elizabeth
Journal of Education, v196 n1 p41-46 2016
In this article an elementary literacy specialist reflects on the use of multigenre, multimodal texts to support the teaching of poetry. She explores the synergy between poetry and related informational, visual, and auditory texts to afford deeper insights into the poem and the poet, in this instance, the poem, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," and the poet, Langston Hughes. The detailed plan for middle-grade students was guided by two questions: "How does learning about the poet enhance our understanding of a poem? How does understanding the poem help us understand the poet?" A list of the multigenre, multimedia resources is provided.
