Supporting Students with Severe Physical Disabilities: The Illinois Model
Malik, Patricia Barrett; Anton, Patricia Wolfe
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v40 n1 p172-185 2013
Highly intelligent and capable high school students investigate their options for postsecondary education based on the strength of the institution's major courses of study, the size of campus, resources available for social activities, and a host of other criteria. The highly intelligent and capable high school student with a severe physical disability is also concerned with the physical access of the campus and residence hall and how their personal care needs will be met. This article describes the unique opportunity that Uiversity Housing and the Division of Disability resources and educational services (DRES) at the University of Illinois had when they partnered to provide state-of-the-art facilities and technology with unique support programs and services for students with severe physical disabilities. Timothy J. Nugent Hall, named after the first director of DRES, opened in the fall of 2010 and houses the Beckwith Residential Support Services (BRSS) programs and staff. This article provides an overview of the approach taken to establish the University Housing and BRSS partnership, the accessible features and support services of Nugent Hall, the processes and approaches utilized by BRSS and University Housing that support the unique needs of students with severe physical disabilities, and the best practices of DRES/BRSS that have led to consistent positive academic outcomes.
