Online learning programs have exploded on the educational scene, growing at a rate of approximately 30% annually. Online programming is here to stay and is changing the face of education. Moreover, this new venue holds great promise for gifted students, with its ability to provide greater access to academically rigorous curriculum, highly qualified instructors, intellectual peers, and 21st-century skills. With this promise come challenges as well--for students, parents, instructors, and administrators. For students and parents, questions and concerns center on meeting academic needs, interaction with like-minded peers, technology, and quality of classes. Instructors struggle to keep pace with the new technologies and effectively translate their practice to the online environment, while administrators grapple with issues of accountability, quality curriculum, and staff development as well as state and national policies that are based upon brick-and-mortar models and emphasize seat time over competency. In this article, best practice strategies in gifted education are presented, followed by a discussion of how online learning can meet the needs of gifted students. Then best practice standards and strategies in online learning are shared. Finally, the authors discuss how these can be combined to create a list of key attributes of quality online courses for gifted students, which could be used by students, parents, and administrators to evaluate how well various programs meet their particular needs.
