Leveraging Technology for the Wellbeing of Children: Shaping the Questions to Ask
Nermeen Dashoush
Childhood Education, v100 n1 p68-71 2024
When designing solutions for early learning, part of the process is clearly identifying a problem that impacts the wellbeing of young children that is both well-researched and in need of innovative solutions. However, with such a vast and complex field, identifying an issue to focus on can be difficult. The questions adults ask children have a considerable influence on the discussions they incite and nurture. Open-ended questions from adults not only model inquiry-based language but also present opportunities for children to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving. Children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds do not receive as much encouragement to ask questions, an outcome significantly influenced by the nature and quality of questions posed to them by adults. It is essential to zoom in on the types of questions teachers pose to children in formal learning educational environments, given their significant impact on multiple domains of a child's development.
