Opening the Door to Language and Digital Skills
Howie, Elisabeth; Colquhoun, Lisa
Childhood Education, v97 n5 p46-49 2021
In a small rural village in the Cambodian province of Kampong Cham, a group of 7th-grade students huddle around Android tablets, engrossed in an English language lesson. Guided by their teacher, they swipe from one interactive learning module to the next. They are not only building English literacy, but also developing digital skills. As they do so, they are having fun, growing in confidence, and, more crucially, opening doors to a range of choices, possibilities, and opportunities that otherwise would not be available to them simply because of the circumstances into which they were born. This is the motivating force behind the innovative EdTech program, PLUS English, pioneered to help make English literacy education and digital learning more accessible for children in low-resource environments. In a world transformed by digital technologies and dominated in many ways by the English language, the program opens doors to economic opportunities and change and allows children in non-English speaking countries across the developing world to be better informed.
