At first glance, architectural design principles would seem to hold little in common with organizing a curriculum or a college student experience. What does designing physical space have to do with creating in-class and out-of-class learning opportunities? The authors believe the answer is "Quite a bit" if you spend any time with universal instructional design (UID), an offshoot of the architectural practice of universal design. In this article, the authors describe the principles of UID and its extension, integrated multicultural instructional design, a model they have devised to help educators build multiculturalism into the curriculum and cocurriculum. They discuss barriers to designing multicultural experiences and offer three examples as guides for successfully overcoming these barriers. (Contains 4 notes.)
