ACER and University of Melbourne Music Evaluation Kit. Handbook and Report.
Bryce, Jennifer
The Melbourne Music Evaluation Kit (MEK) was designed to aid teachers of first-year secondary-school music classes to select appropriate curriculum materials related to the music backgrounds of class members, as indicated by scores on the kit. Tests included in the kit are criterion- referenced and are used as a diagnostic tool to measure students' pitch discrimination, discrimination in length of sounds, volume discrimination, tone color discrimination, pattern recognition, recognition of instruments and instrument groups, and knowledge of musical signs and symbols. In developing MEK, some of the behavioral objectives formulated by a panel of experts were used as a basis for constructing test items. Reliability and validity data are given, as well as a summary of user responses to a questionnaire. (The questionnaire used to evaluate MEK, item analysis data and the music teaching objectives for the Experimental Teaching Project are among the appendices). (MH)
