This volume consists of four issues. Issue 1 looks at some recent research on practice and is composed of these articles: "Reflection on Literacy," a summary of the World Conference on Literacy; "How Effective Is Adult Literacy Education?" that reports outcomes of Ontario Literacy Coalition studies; "UK Trends: Assessing Basic Skills at Work and Workplace Training for Non-Managers," summaries of two UK reports; "'Adcult' [sic] and Visual Literacy: Students as Beachcombers" (R. Scott Lamascus) on advertising in the writing classroom; descriptions of resources on participatory research and practice; and descriptions of educational technology. Issue 2, which looks at issues of women as learners, contains the following: "Women and Literacy"; "The Persisting Power and Costs of the Literacy Myth" (Harvey J. Graff), a comment on Literacy, Economy, and Society; "Women and Work" with classroom activities; "What Is a Feminist Curriculum?" (Kate Nonesuch); "A Feminist Perspective on Literacy Curriculum" (Fran Davis); and "Profiles of ABE [Adult Basic Education] Students: A Provincial Study." Issue 3, on social consequences of literacy, contains the following: "Social Literacies"; "The Massachusetts Workplace Education Initiative" (Bob Bickerton); "Scar-y Stories and Poems" (Francis Kazemek); "Literacy, Economy, and Society: Results of the First International Adult Education Survey (IALS)" (Brian V. Street); and "Measuring Outcomes in Volunteer Programs." Issue 4, on the complexities of literacy, includes these articles: "Visions of Literacy"; "Two Different Theoretical Approaches to Literacy and Their Implication for Adult Literacy Programs"; "Computers as Cognitive Tools"; "Double Duty Dollars: Investing in Adult Education" (Thomas G. Sticht); and "IALS: Ending the Myth of the 'Literacy Myth'" (Stan Jones). Each issue also contains "To Ponder," which provides several short pieces on various topics; book reviews; list of conferences; and announcements. Issues 1, 2, and 4 also contain a supplement, Media Focus," which focus on: "Teaching with Motion Pictures"; "Traditional versus New Television"; and "The Morphing of Media Literacy." (YLB)
