Part-Time Students and Part-Time Study in Higher Education in the UK: Strand 2--A Survey of the Issues Facing Institutions
Boorman, Susan; Brown, Nigel; Payne, Philip; Ramsden, Brian
Universities UK
This is the report on part-time study in UK higher education institutions (HEIs) for Universities UK and GuildHE (previously SCOP) from Nigel Brown Associates. It forms Strand 2 of the wider research into part-time higher education commissioned by Universities UK and GuildHE using quantitative data not available from published sources and responses to a series of issues from a sample of HEIs. This report is based on a series of in-depth interviews with a sample of 26 HEIs across England, Wales and Scotland, including the Open University. The institutions were selected to reflect the different types of institutions in the sector and to provide a geographic spread across the UK. In addition to the two specialist part-time HE providers, the sample included pre and post-1992 universities, HE colleges and institutions in metropolitan areas and those in regional centres. Two Welsh HEIs and two Scottish HEIs were included. The authors checked the pattern of part-time higher education enrolments for the sample as a whole against the distribution for the sector as a whole and this showed a good correspondence at this level of aggregation. The report also draws on the analysis of the data on part-time higher education students by institution derived from a dataset commissioned from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) for Strand 1 of the Universities UK and GuildHE study also undertaken by Nigel Brown Associates (Universities UK 2006a) and data derived from the survey of part-time students undertaken by Professor Claire Callender and NOP Ltd under Strand 3 of the Universities UK and GuildHE study (Universities UK 2006b). List of topics for interviews with institutional staff for the Strand 2 Survey is appended. (Contains 11 figures, 5 tables, and 15 footnotes.) [For Strand 1 of this report, see ED536564.]
